Researchers develop a technique to allow fragile objects to be transferred and released by robotics, without damage, while using a gecko inspired adhesive.

The subtle adhesive forces that allow geckos to seemingly defy gravity, cling to walls and walk across ceilings have inspired a team of researchers in South Korea to build a robotic device that can pick up and release delicate materials without damage. The team, based at Kyungpook National University and Dong-A University, has published their research work in Science and Technology of Advanced Materials, an international science journal. The researchers are hoping it can be applied to the transfer of objects by robotic systems.

The dry but sticky secret of a gecko’s foot lies in its coating of tiny hairs- made of protein- called micro setae. These hairs are around 100 micrometers long and 5 micrometers in diameter. Each hair divides into a number of branches that end in flat triangular pads called spatulae. The spatulae are so small that their molecules interact with those of the surface the gecko is climbing. This creates weak forces of attraction between these molecules, known as van der Waals force. This force is strong enough to hold the gecko in place.

The gecko’s innate adhesive ability has drawn the attention of many researchers and has inspired the use of its adhesion mechanism in robotics. An artificial, mushroom-shaped dry adhesive, that mimics this mechanism, has been used to robotically pick up materials. However, the force needed to detach the adhesive from the material’s surface can lead to its damage, especially if the material is fragile, such as glass. “There have been problems in getting the adhesive to detach easily,” explained Seung Hoon Yoo, first author of the research article. “In order to exploit these adhesive powers in robotic systems, it is imperative that the robot can not only pick up an object, but also readily detach from it to leave the object in its desired location”.

In their study, the team resolved this detachment problem by using a vacuum-powered device, made of soft silicon rubber. In order to detach the dry adhesive without damaging the fragile object being moved, a new detachment method was introduced. This method involves a twisting and lifting motion that pulls the dry adhesive off of the glass surface without causing any damage to it. The researchers found that the addition of this twisting motion caused a ten-fold reduction in the force required for detachment, which could be vital when handling delicate materials.

On conducting tests in which their transfer system was attached to a robotic arm, the researchers demonstrated that it could pick up a delicate glass disc from a sloping surface, move it to a different location and gently set it down without causing any damage to it.

“We expect our research will garner significant interest from the industry, since many companies are very interested in using dry adhesives for temporary attachment and movement of components, especially in robotic applications,” said Sung Ho Lee, one of the study’s authors. He added that his team hopes to serve as a bridge between research and industry by applying it to real industrial applications and developing more advanced models.

In a recent collaboration, ForwardX Robotics, a renowned global leader in vision-based Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs), joined forces with DHL, a highly regarded and internationally recognized supply chain service enterprise. DHL implemented ForwardX’s assisted picking solution in one of its flagship warehouses, dedicated to providing vital daily replenishment for approximately 600 locations for a chain brand coffee store within a single city.

The number of stores supported by the warehouse has experienced an exponential growth, doubling from 300 to 600 within just one year, with peak shipment volume reaching an impressive 400 cubic meters. Anticipating a high-speed growth trajectory this year, the warehouse is projected to support an expansion to approximately 1000 stores. However, these rapid positive developments have also presented some pressing challenges, including an increased workload for our picking personnel, difficulties in recruiting new workers, and the burden of high training costs.

To address these challenges, DHL implemented Forwardx’s assisted picking solution. Within just two months of using ForwardX’s Flex 300-S AMRs, the solution has had a transformative effect on the warehouse’s operations. The collaborative project has yielded a remarkable increase of over 100% in UPH (units picked per hour) and substantial savings of over 30% in operational costs. These results are a testimony that showcase the solution’s accuracy and reliability, reducing costly mistakes.

It is important to acknowledge that manual lift carts and forklifts are indispensable equipment for warehouses dealing with case picking of small and medium-sized items. Ensuring safe collaboration between humans and machines is of utmost significance in such settings. However, it is crucial to note that not all AMRs seamlessly work alongside forklifts. Laser-based AMRs often position their sensors in a way that may create blind spots near the ground, as these sensors rely on horizontal beams and have limited detection angles. Placing laser sensors above a forklift’s fork can lead to a higher risk of collisions and safety concerns, especially when dealing with heavier payloads.

ForwardX AMRs stand out by leveraging advanced sensor fusion technology and computer vision cameras. This combination allows for a comprehensive view of the environment, enhancing perception capabilities and reducing blind spots. This integration ensures safe navigation, minimizing the risk of collisions. Olis Connect is controlled directly in a web browser and delivered on an edge-hosted PC that can be quickly connected to both brand new and legacy industrial robot arms and robotic cells. The system works across robot brands, with Olis Robotics currently providing full support for robots from Universal Robots and FANUC, addressing approximately 20% of the operational stock of more than 3.5 million industrial robots deployed worldwide. With its new funding, Olis is adding support for additional robot brands representing more than half of all industrial robots. The funding will also help expand partnerships with robot system integrators in North America and develop new software products.

Once Olis’ plug & play device is installed and secure remote access has been configured, users can monitor and manage their automation remotely from anywhere via any browser-capable device. If a problem occurs with the robot, Olis Connect sends out an alert via a secure connection to the user’s device all without connecting to the cloud – a key consideration given the threats surrounding today’s industrial cybersecurity landscape. Users can then use the system to remotely perform error recovery actions such as releasing its grip on a part or moving the robot from its error position.

Olis Connect provides users with a unique remote error correction functionality, which means that they can get robots back up and running remotely, reducing downtime from hours to mere minutes. Three cameras provide low latency monitoring of the entire cell, enabling 24/7 measurement of Key Performance Indicators such as OEE and instant, on demand video replay to forensically diagnose the root cause of any error.

Leveraging the Olis Robotics team’s expertise in industrial robot safety, Olis Connect is designed to provide remote access without violating the robot’s existing safety permissions and restrictions. This means that velocity, acceleration, and joint limit settings on the robot are always obeyed when remote controlling the arm.

A record 517,385 new industrial robots were installed worldwide in 2021, according to the World Robotics Report 2022 from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), driven by a host of factors from labor shortages and reshoring initiatives to rising ecommerce demand. The IFR expects annual growth rates in the medium to upper single-digit range.

The growing number of use cases for SWIR imaging, which expands vision in automotive and robotics beyond the visible spectrum, is driving demand for low-cost mass-market SWIR cameras.
