New r1 orders globally are now shipping within three business days

Today, AI startup rabbit inc. announced that r1, a first-of-its-kind AI-native device that puts easy access to the industry’s most advanced consumer AI models in your pocket, is now available across the European Union and the United Kingdom. In addition, rabbit announced that a****** r1 orders globally will ship within three business days.

r1 is rabbit’s first hardware product and has made waves in the consumer electronics industry as the best-selling and most-used native AI device to-date, with more than 100,000 devices sold. One-third of r1 devices sold to-date have been purchased in Europe. Customers have discovered a wide variety of helpful use cases to improve their daily lives with AI, from deciphering complicated parking and road signs, and getting important gardening tips using the AI-powered rabbit eye camera, to translating conversations in real-time and generating healthy recipe ideas with access to leading large language models (LLMs).

r1, rabbit OS and rabbithole – a personalized AI agent experience from end to end

Running on a personalized operating system, r1 is the only consumer AI device that gives users quick and affordable access to the leading AI models in one device, including LLMs from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Anthropic. Combining custom-built software with sleek hardware designed in collaboration with renowned design firm Teenage Engineering, r1 is an on-the-go curiosity catcher, a journal you write with your voice, an encyclopedia at your fingertips, a recorder that summarizes your every thought, a pocket translator, and a reason to bring friends and family together. Each user can manage their personalized history and supported online services in rabbithole, the accompanying secure cloud hub and “brain” of the user’s personal AI assistant. Take a look at our use cases to learn more about how r1 offers a new and useful AI-native experience.

Commitment to constant improvement for a better user experience

Since launching r1, rabbit has demonstrated its community-focused approach to ensure a fast feedback loop between its consumers and engineers, continuously and rapidly improving and adding more value to r1 through regular software updates based on user feedback. The new “beta rabbit” feature, introduced in July, enables r1 to provide significantly smarter answers to more complex queries. A number of other key updates have also made r1 more useful and delightful, including global memory recall, which personalizes responses in relation to a user’s rabbithole journal content; Wolfram|Alpha integration, which provides users with increased accuracy in computational queries related to mathematics, science, technology, society, and culture; and Magic Camera, which turns photos taken by r1 into creative AI-generated images. While there are currently some regional limitations in Europe, including availability of certain connected apps and additional operating languages, the product is vastly more capable than it was at launch, with new improvements and features added through regular over-the-air (OTA) and cloud updates. This cadence will also apply to Europe as the team continues to listen to feedback and rapidly apply it to the user experience.

“r1 was designed from day one to be a global device, and we want to deliver it to every corner of the world,” said Jesse Lyu, Founder and CEO of rabbit. “We’re very encouraged to see the existing appetite for r1 in Europe already as we pave the way in this new category of AI-native products.”

Built around security from day 1 and constantly becoming stronger

rabbit designed the architecture of rabbit OS with security and privacy at the core. “The most important thing we do at rabbit is earn and protect customer trust. This is something that everyone, not just the security team, is charged with when they join the company,” said Matt Domko, Head of Security at rabbit. “We’re actively taking steps to consistently improve our security program on a daily basis.”

To keep up with the fast pace of rabbit’s software updates and growing set of consumer use cases, rabbit regularly works with credible third-party security partners to test the resilience of its system and ensure consumers’ privacy and information security are effectively protected. Learn more about the company’s recent penetration test in this blog post.

r1 only listens when the user presses the physical push-to-talk button to interact with the device, and its rotating camera defaults to a position that physically blocks the lens unless the user explicitly requests it. rabbit also implemented a vulnerability disclosure program (VDP) in May to encourage researchers, developers, and the general public to submit vulnerabilities in a responsible manner.

rabbit r1 is available today across the entire European Union (excluding Malta) and can be purchased at www.rabbit.tech. It costs $199 with no subscription necessary; please refer to the website for current local prices in the UK and Europe. New orders globally will also be processed and shipped within three business days.

Balbix, an AI-powered Cyber Risk and Exposure Management platform, introduced its BIX conversational AI assistant at Blackhat USA 2024. The BIX AI assistant is already in use at many Fortune 1000 companies as part of an early access program.

Today, managing cyber risks requires identifying key vulnerabilities and understanding related threats, analyzing attack paths, evaluating the potential impact on business, and assessing how well security controls will work. Each of these tasks requires specific tools, integrations, dashboards, reports, and tickets with remediation steps, as well as dedicated personnel to oversee and manage these activities. However, with vast amounts of data from different sources, it is very challenging to understand and prioritize these risks and act quickly. Communicating cyber risks to those outside the security team is particularly difficult, as they often don’t grasp the technical details or the consequences of potential security breaches.

Imagine if managing cyber risk was as easy as asking a colleague a question and getting a clear, actionable answer. What if you could also instruct your assistant to keep relevant stakeholders informed about their responsibilities and deadlines, and to provide you with periodic updates? Picture every key player in cybersecurity— from the CISO, CIO, VM teams and security operations to IT staff and legal teams—having their own AI assistants to help manage their part of the cyber risk and exposure management puzzle, conversing in role-appropriate language. Today we are taking a huge step forward towards this vision.

BIX has the following key capabilities:

  1. Personalization: BIX customizes its choice of words, detail level, recommendations, and interactions according to the user’s role, preferences, and past conversations. For example, BIX can explain the financial impact of a threat like “Log4j” in monetary terms to executives while also identifying specific cases and suggesting mitigating actions when interacting with IT staff.
  2. Context Awareness: From time to time, we all use Google, ChatGPT and other tools to understand risk concepts on a generic level. BIX integrates with your cybersecurity, IT, and business systems and understands details about your assets, apps, software versions, users, and their roles in your business, specific threats facing your organization, your security measures, who’s responsible for what, who works fast and who does not, acceptable risk levels, and your target SLAs. By querying BIX, you can leverage this knowledge to help understand specific security risks and recommended mitigation tasks in context.
  3. Mobile Experience: BIX is available on your smartphone and provides answers when you need them, greatly improving your situational awareness. BIX streamlines cybersecurity decision-making by eliminating the need to consult multiple widgets and dashboards across different tools, saving you hours or even days of gathering analytics.
  4. Recommendations: In cybersecurity, it’s common to get sidetracked by irrelevant tasks or overwhelmed by endless research on complex topics, especially for less experienced IT and security staff. BIX acts like an executive assistant, guiding stakeholders by suggesting key questions to ask. This helps organizations move from a focus on threats to a more effective, risk-based approach to cybersecurity.

Ed Amoroso, Founder and CEO of research and advisory firm TAG Cyber, stated, “Managing enterprise cyber risk at acceptable levels is an extremely challenging job. Unfortunately, organizations across the industry face deep cybersecurity challenges due to tools sprawl, skills gaps, and budget limitations. Further, failure to comply with regulatory requirements on materiality, patching, and timely software updates has sharply increased organizations’ financial and reputational risk”. Ed also added, “Balbix’s new AI assistant can improve overall enterprise understanding of material risks as well as operational efficiency, speeding up response times. This benefits organizations new to security and those with established large teams.”

Also Read: Humanoid Robots And Their Potential Impact On the Future of Work

Under the hood, BIX utilizes RAG-based Large Language Models (LLMs) running on specialized NVIDIA hardware. However, even the most advanced standalone LLMs struggle with multi-step tasks that require navigating different contexts and managing dependencies and privacy constraints. This is where BIX’s multi-agent architecture comes in, breaking down complex problems into discrete subtasks handled by specialized agents, often operating in different privacy domains. This enables BIX to offer a safe, accurate, and extensible approach to cybersecurity conversations and automate tasks previously considered beyond reach.

Early users of BIX have seen a dramatic improvement in their overall cyber risk and exposure management experience. Understanding risk, making decisions, and risk response times have gone down from days and weeks to minutes. Combined with the rest of Balbix’s capabilities, this has translated into sharply reduced risk and savings from productivity improvements.

“Cybersecurity is inherently complex, demanding not only extensive automation but also simplification and streamlined communication,” stated Gaurav Banga, founder and CEO of Balbix. “Until now, Balbix has used AI primarily for computational tasks in cyber risk management. We are pioneering its use to demystify the complexities of cyber risk for all stakeholders and enhance communication between them. This release of BIX is a step forward in managing risk and exposures more effectively. It marks a significant development in our ability to be proactive, rather than reactive, in our cybersecurity efforts.”

AI for Mom and Pop? Small businesses need help with AI

AI is a major disrupter, offering great benefits and free labor. However, small companies are being left behind while larger companies are embracing this new tech, writes Christine Telyan

In theory, AI represents a major opportunity for businesses of all sizes to unlock new opportunities and markets and to radically overhaul their operations. In some quarters, AI is being touted as a cure for all business ills. No matter what problem a business has, AI can solve it, enthusiasts say.

But while AI is certainly a disruptive force, we would be mistaken in thinking that its benefits are being distributed evenly. As it stands, AI is simply more useful for experienced teams than it is for solo entrepreneurs or, indeed, Mom-and-Pop type stores and businesses.

Also Read: Humanoid Robots And Their Potential Impact On the Future of Work

Small businesses, the vast majority of which have two employees or fewer, simply don’t have the time, knowledge or expertise to take full advantage of these new AI tools. Yes, theoretically, AI could save them vast amounts of time and enable all sorts of new activities. But many small business owners are so heavily focused on the day-to-day of their companies that learning how to effectively use new software, even a relatively straightforward one like ChatGPT, is more challenging and daunting than people think.

We surveyed our own customers and received over 800 responses. The message on AI was very clear. Only a quarter of small businesses regularly use AI-powered tools. So, despite all the commentary and discussion, 75 percent of small businesses have yet to embrace these new tools—even though many are low cost relative to the time saved. While other studies have shown that small businesses are widely adopting AI, such studies consider small businesses to be companies with up to 100 employees; the experience of such businesses is vastly different from the mom-and-pops we surveyed.

Indeed, for larger businesses, things look rather different. Surveys suggest that roughly 75 percent of medium and large businesses are using AI regularly. These results suggest that, rather than being a leveler and democratizing force, AI is creating a chasm between larger businesses and small ones. As one of my team suggested, AI could stand for ‘Absolute Inequality’, unless small businesses get some help.

Our survey revealed that nearly half (48%) of small business owners work more than 60 hours per week, with more than 73% working over 40 hours weekly. So small businesses are still working very long hours. So why aren’t they employing digital tools to make life easier? We all know tech can be used to schedule meetings and client calls, improve inventory management, track expenses, create targeted marketing and more. But why aren’t small businesses using it?

Well, of course some are, and the 25 percent in our survey who regularly use AI are saving up to five hours per week. But it seems that some need more encouragement, help and, probably, the support of platforms that do more of the heavy lifting for them.

So, what steps can small businesses and organizations take to better embrace AI? Here are some simple steps and questions that I would recommend business leaders to consider.

Also Listen: AI Inspired Series by AiThority.com: Featuring Bradley Jenkins, Intel’s EMEA lead for AI PC & ISV strategies

Identify low-hanging fruit

Let’s start where it’s easiest to find success. Looking for simple, repetitive tasks is a good place. Make a list of activities that you do regularly and which eat into your time. Even if you don’t know how to automate these yet, at least be aware of what the problems are. Also, add to the list things you’d like to do more regularly but don’t have the time to do properly. A list of problems might not sound like a good start but these are low-hanging fruit for you to pick later.

Look for help

Don’t suffer alone. Now that you know areas where you can potentially automate, it’s worth asking others how to do this. Engage with small business development centers (SBDCs), business networks and professionals that can help.

Use voice-powered tech

One of the big pluses of AI is that so much can now be done with voice. You can speak so much faster than you can type text, so get into the habit of using your voice to write and issue commands. A very simple but powerful application of this is to use tools like Google Gemini or Microsoft Copilot which integrate with Gmail or Outlook respectively to draft, send, and manage emails via voice commands. This can extend further into task management.

Find user-friendly platforms

There are many AI-powered platforms covering everything from accounting to calendar management to website creation. Look for what others in your network are using. But if it feels like too much, then look for a platform that comes with a service attached, too. Some banks and accounting firms are now using AI tools to help business owners gain better insight into their spending patterns. At UENI, our web design and copywriting experts leverage AI in our proprietary tools to deliver powerful SEO content for pennies you’d pay elsewhere. It’s a smart strategy to work with organizations that know how to get the most out of AI for small businesses.

Do it only if it adds value

AI should either save you time or give you insight into how to do things better. If you are able to usefully save time with a chatbot on your website without compromising your customer’s experience too much or personalize email content, then it is worth carving the time to set these things up or getting help to do it. But always start with what your business uniquely needs to drive the tools you use.

The More Tech Evolves, The More Accountable We Become

In the grand tapestry of human progress, few threads are as prominent as the evolution of technology. From the invention of the wheel to the dawn of the internet, each advancement reshaped the fabric of our society and fundamentally altered the way we live, work, and interact. AI will inevitably be no different.

News of OpenAI halting the use of one of its ChatGPT voices after Scarlett Johansson reported it sounded “eerily similar” to her own is the latest example of how technological evolution requires more accountability. The onus currently falls on the AI creator, as seen in various scenarios of problematic AI hallucinations when incorrect or misleading results generated by AI models occur. But playing the tech blame game fails to consider accountability from the other party involved: the user.

From Google’s I/O and OpenAI’s GPT-4o to the growing catalog of widely accessible AI solutions, we are at a critical juncture where innovation and accountability intersect, and while it’s exciting, we as a collective society must choose our next move wisely.

AI-Era Is Here

As AI presents more solutions once confined to science fiction, the ramifications of emerging technologies have only begun to reveal concerns many can’t fathom. A recent report detailed the issues surrounding AI bias and its link to diversity and inclusion in hiring practices. Similarly, The New York Times shed light on deepfakes that perpetuate false narratives and manipulate public opinion. Both examples serve as poignant reminders of the dual nature of technological advancement: a balancing act between the benefits of innovation and collective due diligence.

When NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang boldly asserted AI hallucinations are solvable at GTC this year, he put the onus on the average AI user to examine the source and the context. And while there are many other mitigation techniques to troubleshoot, such as prompt engineering, implementing guardrails, and enabling grounding, Huang’s media literacy approach to solving hallucinations raises an important point for all users to consider: with great power of AI comes great responsibility for the ethical use and stewardship of these powerful tools.

Double-Edged Sword: Benefits vs. Responsibility

AI – specifically Generative AI (Gen AI) – is at the center of this epoch of efficiency consuming the business world, and a staggering 80% of decision-makers surveyed by Forrester Consulting say the importance of Gen AI is expected to only increase in the next 12 months. Gen AI is empowering organizations to streamline their decision-making processes, automate more mundane tasks, and optimize workflows. It’s even driving more productivity and creativity in the educational sector. For organizations to ignore such advancements would be unrealistic.

The capabilities that make AI promising also present significant risks if left unchecked; just consider the rise of deepfakes, a phenomenon enabled by AI to create convincing but entirely fabricated audio and video content. These digital manipulations potentially sow discord, spread disinformation, and erode trust in public institutions and the media. In a world reliant on digital communication and media consumption, the consequences of such manipulations are pervasive and profound.

Beyond misinformation and bias, over-reliance on AI fosters a passive acceptance of information without vital examination, depleting the foundations of rational decision-making. A lack of critical thinking impairs the integrity of our processes and leaves us vulnerable to exploitation and deception. This is pertinent when considering the volume of businesses worldwide deploying Gen AI – or practically throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks without strategy or guidance – continues to not only grow but reveal stark challenges to address that makes over-reliance a concern.

AI hallucinations serve as a stark reminder of the perils from unchecked reliance on technology. Without accountability measures and fact-checking protocols in place, these hallucinations proliferate rampant false narratives and distort our understanding of the world around us.

The dichotomy of AI’s immense benefits and massive responsibility is clear: while AI revolutionizes industries and improves lives, its potential for misuse and unintended consequences can’t be ignored. Simply put, the more our technology evolves, the more accountable we must be for our actions.

Individual Accountability and Collective Awareness

It’s compulsory to cultivate critical thinking skills and maintain a healthy skepticism to information we encounter online through continuously questioning the validity of sources and scrutinizing content we consume.

We, as individuals, must exercise the same power we use to debunk myths and validate a news story in mere seconds to audit AI. Collectively, governance and skill development will be inherent to successful AI and Gen AI comprehension, whether it be at home or in the office. According to Forrester, 80% of business leaders say their employees aren’t aware of certain use cases and struggle to understand Gen AI due to its complexity, while 79% are concerned with their organization’s ability to execute on current Gen AI goals based on the current level of expertise.

By mastering individual accountability, we can graduate to a higher collective awareness needed to develop extensive AI strategies that promote governance and skill development – and in turn, fight the very threats of AI hallucinations and deepfakes we grapple with today.

To further ensure responsible AI use and responsive AI implementation, there are ways organizations can advocate AI accountability:

  • Foster a culture of accountability and transparency, ensuring ethical development and deployment of AI.
  • Implement accountability measures and establish clear guidelines for AI systems to mitigate misuse and promote responsible innovation.
  • Invest in employee training and education on AI ethics and best practices to make informed decisions and uphold ethical standards at work.
  • Use tools and practices for fact-checking to verify the accuracy of information and prevent the proliferation of falsehoods online.
  • Stay informed on the significance of emerging AI technologies to understand proper use and potential impacts on society.
  • Test AI systems for biases before rolling them out.
  • Add safety and security guardrails that avoid sensitive data exposure and hallucinations.

AI is far from perfect; there will be no shortage of AI mistakes we’ll witness in the years to come, but the realm of Gen AI is where my optimism truly lies, as its evolution of the orchestration layer is a strong indicator of what we can expect in the future – a world where Gen AI will use its linguistic prowess to solve complex problems, responsibly. Like many technologies we’ve witnessed throughout history, AI too will be engrained in many aspects of our lives. It’s important to remember today’s AI mistakes are the stepping stones to getting where we want to be tomorrow.

Exa Raises $22MM to Build the Search Engine for AI

Funding led by Lightspeed Venture Partners will allow Exa to scale their first search product and become the data layer for AI applications.

Exa, an AI research lab redesigning search for the AI age, announced $22M in seed and Series A funding led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, with participation from NVentures, NVIDIA’s venture capital arm, and Y Combinator. This investment will accelerate Exa’s mission to build the search engine for AI.

“Soon, AI will search the web more than humans,” said Exa CEO, Will Bryk. “But search engines like Google were designed for humans, not AI. Whereas Google is optimized for human clicks, AI needs a search engine that’s powerful and precise enough to retrieve thousands of results with the best information. That’s where Exa comes in – we’re the first search engine built for AI.”

Exa trains embedding models, using the same technology behind ChatGPT, to convert web pages into lists of numbers known as embeddings. The result is a technology that packs the power of large language models (LLMs) into the search process itself, making search smarter than keyword approaches like Google. Smarter search grounds AI applications in the most relevant world knowledge.

For example, on Google, a search for “companies in SF building futuristic hardware” returns articles created by search engine optimization (SEO) experts to attract human clicks. On Exa, the same search returns a list of companies that match that description – what was actually asked for.

“Exa represents the intersection of an incredible team, and a big vision for how AI applications will retrieve fresh knowledge. It’s impressive to see what Exa was able to build with such a small team and minimal resources,” said Guru Chahal, Partner at Lightspeed. “The three critical components of AI systems are compute, models, and data. Nvidia supplies the compute substrate. Anthropic, OpenAI and other foundation model companies train the models, and Exa can provide the critical data and knowledge layers. We’re thrilled to support them as they redefine how AI utilizes knowledge and ultimately search as a whole.”

So far, thousands of companies and developers have integrated Exa, from AI writing assistants helping students cite relevant papers, to VC firms sourcing highly specific startups, to AI research teams at companies like Databricks assembling large, high quality training datasets.

“My cofounder Jeff and I actually built a search engine together when we were roommates at Harvard,” said Will. “At the time, we thought crowdsourcing links would enable better search than Google. But now five years later, AI enables something much bigger. AI has the capacity to truly organize the web’s knowledge, and when we do that there will be many magical use cases beyond just a search API.”
